Skin numbing creams may prove life threatening: FDA

Skin numbing creams that are often used to soothe burning or itching skin as well as pain before, during and after various procedures, contain numbing drugs, including, lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine and prilocaine, may result in life-threatening consequences too. This warning by FDA is bound to confound you. Actually, FDA has come up with this warning after a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman who applied numbing creams after laser hair removal on their legs died.
Experts believe that such skin numbing creams may seep into bloodstreams, causing a threat to life. This study is really an eye-opener since it exposes how harmful such skin numbing creams could be.
Personally, I believe that some alternative of these skin numbing creams should be discovered, which are comparatively safer and carry no or minimal side effects. On this issue the following advice by FDA seems quite convincing, which states:
You should also discuss with your doctor whether there are other ways to reduce the pain you may feel during the procedure.

Peach fruit to moisturize sensitive skin with natural emollients

Peach fruit is a natural emollient and therefore most of the skin care products use peach puree or peels. Research shows that peach not only softens the skin, but is also reponsible for hydrating the skin along with imparting the skin a rich glow. Therefore, the antioxidant and minearl-rich peach is used for topical treatments of problem skin.
The following homemade face pack can be considered for moisturising and toning the skin:
Whip peach puree with mashed papaya and lemon juice. Apply this paste on the face and wash-off with rose water when dry.

Laptops: Killing our spines!

With fast moving life, laptops are no longer a luxury but a necessity and thanks to the price fall, which has increased users’ access to this wireless technology. However, all that came with laptops isn’t good but some bad has also managed to seep into our lives, with back problems, becoming common, as laptops are killing our spines
It is quite strange to know that girls as young as 12 are being diagnosed with nerve damage caused by slouching over screens for hours. Actually, while sitting before a laptop our body instinctively adopts a poor posture, giving way to several problems associated with necks, shoulders, spines, etc. Confirming this fact further back specialists unveils that four in five patients working on portable PCs or laptops sustain chronic nerve damage, sooner or later.
Desktop computers are designed in such a way that ensure a healthy body posture while working on it, however, quite opposite is the case with laptops, as perching a laptop on the legs and then staring down at the monitor, and puts unnecessary strain on neck, spine and legs, giving way to several health related problems.
How countries like Britain are fast turning into a nation of slouch potatoes due to boom in the number of laptop users could be explained through the delineation, presented by London-based chiropractor Michael Durntall, in his words:
I also see many people in their twenties and thirties with a dowager’s hump - a rounding at the base of the neck - after only a few years of looking down at a small screen while sitting slumped on a chair for long periods.
Studies have also proved that long working on laptops prevents the nerves and tendons from moving freely, as they normally moves, which increases susceptibility to nerve injuries. In addition, other health hazards that laptop use has been accredited with can also not be left unmentioned, like-
Laptop Computers May Affect Male Fertility
Laptops ‘pose health risk to children’
So, in brief, it could be asserted that where advent of wireless technology, in the form of laptop, has revolutionized the way we live, it has also exposed us to some severe threats, befalling on us in the form of neck, shoulder and spine related problems.
Therefore, dire need of rational approach towards laptop’s use is seriously required; otherwise, it won’t take too long to turn this world, inhibited by dowager’s humped people.

Work related stress causing depression among young workers: Study

Depression and anxiety disorders are increasing among young people having high stress jobs according to a study conducted by researchers at the institute of psychiatry at King’s College London to find a link between stressful working conditions and the mental health of workers.
Nearly 1,000 people in the early stages of their careers whose average age was 32 and those who had no previous history of disorders were assessed. It was found that forty five percent of the participants were going through major depression or anxiety disorders and attributed these symptoms to work related stress.
Work stress appears to bring on diagnosable forms of depression and anxiety in previously healthy young workers; in fact the occurrence is two times higher than among workers whose jobs are less demanding
says Dr Maria Melchior, lead author of the study.
It is interesting to note here, that most of the high pressured jobs were not only high collared jobs, but included ordinary jobs like chefs, school teachers and construction workers. This is probably due to the inflexible deadlines and also the constant struggle to meet up to the public expectations.
The rate of depression has nearly doubled in the last decade and the number of women going through depression due to work related stress has also increased.
The least stressful jobs according to the study were librarians, speech therapists, hairdressers, postmen and those in administrative jobs.
Find out what you can do to remain stress free at your work place here.

Dark Chocolate: An antidote to fatigue!

“Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate”
Certified chocoholics, now have more reasons to grab another bar of chocolate without feeling guilty! You were only doing yourself a big favor by having your daily dose of chocolate and a new study has confirmed that you were just right in doing so.
The study revealed that a daily dose of chocolate may reduce the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue that is not improved by bed rest and that may be worsened by physical or mental activity.
CFS affects over one billion people and the cause of it is not known. However, the symptoms include muscle fatigue, insomnia and bouts of memory loss.
There is no cure for CFS and the disorder may be controlled to an extent by making lifestyle changes including handling stress with relaxation.
When researchers of Hull York Medical School carried out a trial on about ten patients who received a daily dose of 45 gm of dark chocolate for two months, they found that the patients had lesser symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.
However, the results were not the same with when the patients had white chocolate that was dyed brown.
Dark chocolate is known to contain high amounts of polyphenols similar to the antioxidants found in green tea. The polyphenols improve the serotonin levels in the brain which is associated with the CFS and is also known to reduce high blood pressure.
Chocolate is also a mood elevator giving you an instant energy lift.
Now that you have valid reasons, go for the bar but know your limits or you will end up piling up ‘FAT’ in your quest to cut the ‘FATIGUE’!

Asthma connected with wealth levels

Poverty might be proving a major stint in our fight against deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and cancer. However, situation changes dramatically when it comes to asthma, with majority of asthmatic patients coming from affluent countries like the US, UK, Netherlands…
Conclusion based on around 22 countries worldwide puts forth a shocking equation of asthma and wealth gap, which seems to be running parallel. Shockingly enough, where in unhygienic Indian cities like Mumbai kids susceptibility to asthma symptoms amounts just up to 2 %, so-called hygienic cities like that of Netherlands goes up to 59%.
As a whole, we could say that asthma rates among kids of wealthier countries are almost double if compared to less affluent nations. This weird equation asks for a deeper analysis, as to:
• How asthma is connected with wealth level?
• Why kids of wealthier nations are more vulnerable to asthma?
• How this enhanced level of asthma could be brought down?
Whatever comes out, finally? We can’t keep a blind eye to the fact that kids in wealthier nations often enjoy higher stands of living that include better hygiene, better health facilities, more reliance on indoor games, etc. All this somewhere is laming our kids, especially on health front, which is confirmed form the a fact according to which in America alone since 1980 there has been a greater than 100 percent increase in annual asthma-related deaths in the U.S. The following quip by krenz4 is a wonderful derision against these so-called hygienic societies:
…the human body needs some germs to operate properly. Wealthier American children have been sanitized and sterilized so much their bodies reject anything naturally occurring in their lives.
On the contrary, in developing countries, which are hygienically inferior this (asthmatic) rate is comparatively lower; but has started spiraling there too, now - thanks to rapid urbanization and fast industrialization. Well, not clear the reason behind this disparity. However, may be that kids’ exposure to some bacteria helps them develop resistance against bacteria-borne allergies, particularly asthma. It doesn’t mean that kids should be exposed intentionally to some bacteria or unhygienic conditions.
However, their mechanism should, at least, be allowed to develop some resistance against such common allergies; otherwise, in the name of providing kids with comforts, we would just be crippling them in one way or the other.

'Mark C test' reduces antidepressants-related suicide rate

When it comes to the use of antidepressants, people are always sketchy about the results. In order to restore the public belief in the antidepressants, the Mark C test was carried out recently. This was also geared towards reducing the suicide rate in the US.
According to the Center for Disease control (CDC), the suicide rates in 2004 increased dramatically. This is what a September ‘07 CDC survey stated. As an effort to curb the suicide rates, the NeuroMark company, the developers of the Mark C test developed this new testing.
The company officials mentioned that earlier there was no way to figure out whether antidepressants would help or harm patients. Now the Mark C test,
differentiates between the subset of patients who are at a risk of suicide and those who could take antidepressants safely.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health warning against the antidepressant drugs a few years back. But, people still used this kind of drug. The Mark C is the fine line between life and suicide.
How does the Mark C test work?
A cotton swab is used to get DNA sample, very much like the technique in a crime lab. The genes GRIK 2 and GRIA 3 are used as parameters to encode the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate.
I think I better stop here since, the actual details are next to incomprehensible unless you are medically inclined. The bottom line is: Mark C is helping prevent suicide from antidepressants.

Replace your kids' health-food with dietary supplements?

Worried moms are often found giving kids dietary supplements in a bid to see them hale and hearty. Most of them are bought over the counter and are not prescribed by the health specialist.
Kids are stuffing themselves with junk food all the time, and not eating enough required food, they are not getting the required nutrients.
An interesting study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health reveals that more than 30 percent of the American children take some kind of dietary supplements such as multivitamins and multi-minerals.
The study analyzed data on more than 10,000 children from 1999 to 2002 and found that 31.8 percent of children less than 18 yrs had used dietary supplements in the previous 30 days.
Here are some more interesting facts that were published in the journal ‘Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine’.
• Supplements were used by 38.3 percent of non-Hispanic white children, 22.4 percent of Mexican Americans, and 18.8 percent of non-Hispanic blacks.
• Multivitamins and multi-minerals (18.3 percent) were the most commonly used supplements, followed by single vitamins (4.2 percent), single minerals (2.4 percent), and botanical supplements (0.8 percent).
• 83.9 percent of children who took any supplements took only one, 11.8 percent took two, and 4.3 percent took three or more.
• Supplement use in children was associated with higher family income, a smoke-free environment, lower body mass index, and less daily television, video game or computer time.
• Underweight children or those at risk for being underweight were most likely to take supplements.
Researchers of NIH Office of Dietary Supplements said,
Dietary supplements provide a consistent daily source of nutrients for nearly one-third of U.S. children, yet individual and national-level estimates of nutrient intake rarely account for them.
While it is okay to give supplements to children to prevent malnutrition, it is a bad idea to replace healthy foods with these pills unless the kids are allergic to particular foods. Healthy meals and snacks can provide your kids all the required nutrients.
So, toss those supplements out and use the dollars saved to buy fruits and veggies instead!
